Details

Very little is know of this engine, other than it was brought to Wortley Top Forge from a Snuff Mill in Sheffield. It is however suspected that it is the oldest horizontal steam engine in Great Britain, if not the world.

This may seem a radical claim when little of its history is known, however the design is very unusual and must come from the very early days of rotary engines.

The engine frames are cast iron, with dowels as well as bolts through to secure the cylinder and slide bars.

The engine is currently being moved into the Foundry building where it can be displayed under cover. As part of this work, a small number of new parts are being manufactured and careful restoration work to the cylinder, bearings and bearing faces may allow the engine to be turned over by a suitable motor.
