There are several ways that people can help the efforts to restore and conserve Top Forge, Rockley Furnace & Engine House, Bower Spring Furnaceand the Hoylandswaine Nail Forge.
The most direct way is to join the society and become an active member, mainly at Top Forge. This, of cause, is only possible if you live within about an hours drive of Wortley. Where ever you live, you can still become a Member of the South Yorkshire Industrial History Society as we already have members around the World.
If you are interested in actually working at Top Forge, you must first become a member of the society. We would then advise you to visit Wortley and talk to us in person.
Jobs to be done at Wortley are unbelievably diverse; in the Summer there is Gardening, grass cutting and (weather permitting) painting the buildings and equipment. For the rest of the year, there are stationary steam and I.C. engines to clean, paint or restore, as well as making replacement parts using the machine tools here.
If you are good at talking, particularly making the history of the Forge into a story interesting to Children, you could become a Guide. Be warned, you must also be good at walking, and remember most visitors seem to come as soon as you pick up a sandwich or cut of tea.
For more ideas, you will soon be able to look at our 'Current Projects' Page that is currently being constructed.
Wortley Top Forge has two or three Special Open Days per year. At these there are often temporary exhibits and displays. These have in the past included small Stationary Engines and Vintage Cars.
If you have something that is suitable for display at such an event, please let us know.
We are not generally on the lookout for new long-term exhibits for the Museum, but that does not mean we are not interested and our members would be happy to advise on the best method of disposing of Historic items. In recent months several very useful pieces of equipment have been accepted by us.
We are also in contact with other Museums / Collections who may be interested
We are always in need of help with Publicity. This can range from helping to run sales stands at exhibitions and galas down to asking other museums and the like to display our leaflets.
Most Museums have leaflets or Brochures to give out and Wortley Top Forge is no exception. We have an area for displaying such leaflets from other sites, and ask that these sites give out our Leaflets
If you have a web site or know a group that has and you would like to Link that site with ours, please let us know.
