Stepping Stones at Top Forge

For many years a footpath crossed the Top Forge site, which as the area is encircled by the river, then crossed the river Don on stepping stones. The footpath then followed Chemistry Lane and continued up to Wortley Village.

No date is know for the photograph, but it looks to be pre 1912, as there is a wagon clearly visible by the coal pile of Top Forge.

On the original card and a blown up photograph, it is possible to make out several carts and the remains of several more.

The water flowing into the river from the opposite bank just beyond the stepping stones is the overflow channel from the Forge Dams. Judging by the flow, the waterwheel are not in use on this particular day.
