Looking from near the current 'Smithy' building along the back of the cottages to the forge entrance.
The rear of the cottages was clearly used as a stockyard for finished axles as they are stacked in three rows here. The actual number of axles can only be guessed at as the sheet are covering piles three or four axles high.
There is a distinct lack of coal compared with our other photograph of this area. Does this suggest the forge is being run down, or even, has stop working?
It is clear from the original print, that there is no smoke coming from the chimneys - the dark blurs that can be seen are the damper operating rods, which are all in the closed position.
